reCaptcha

I’ve added a captcha plugin to this site (reCaptcha) to fight the huge amount of random URL comment spam which is unfortunately not captured by my askismet installation – sorry for the inconvenience.

At least if you type in the captcha correctly your comment should be instantly visible by now.

  1. Have you started getting referral spam yet? I’m getting flooded with it, and I really don’t see what they expect to get out of this. Here’s some of my top referrers for the month:

(“www” and “.com” removed so as not to give them any search engine weight).

  2. No, luckily not yet. I guess this site is not so important for them 😉

Incoming (bad) links should drive the pagerank of the linked website (yours) lower if my understanding is right, but yeah, I don’t know what the linkers should gain from that (given the fact that a site does not gain anything in the pagerank just by linking to quality sites).

  3. Ah, but see, that’s what makes this bizarre – they don’t actually have my sites linked on theirs. They’re just doing something to make it look like they’re sending me hits so that they get to the top of my referrer logs.

I’m guessing they’re doing this to numerous sites with the thought being “Well, maybe they display top referrers on their site”, but they don’t actually look at the sites they’re fucking with. That’s the only thing I can think of, and it’s pretty stupid if so, but I’m clueless beyond that one.
